Washington & Great Falls Electric Railway Trestle in Danger of Collapse

DCinruins.

336One of my all-time favorite DC ruins is in danger of collapse, but the Washington & Great Falls Electric Railway Trestle near Georgetown University has been granted a stay of execution.  Plans to demolish the trestle are on hold as Metro, the DC Department of Transportation, and the mayor’s office consider the best, safest way to preserve and repurpose the 120 year old structure.

Via WTOP:

“There is debris actually falling off the bridge now; you can see that on the ground,” said Jim Ashe, Metro’s manager of Environmental Planning and Compliance at a public hearing before D.C.’s Historic Preservation Review Board.

“Our goal is not so much to demolish the bridge, but to make the area safe in a manner that’s consistent with WMATA’s mission.”
